Community Nutrition

My community nutrition experience gave me the opportunity to practice in a variety of settings - I was able to fulfill some of my requirements through working per diem at the WIC program, as well as working in an outpatient setting with a Mountainside Medical Center dietitian serving community members in a cardiac rehab program and those receiving chemotherapy treatment at our infusion center. I also had the opportunity to create nutrition lessons and educational materials to serve those in my community and those in the Mountainside Medical Center community. In addition, I attended a few CUE-level webinars on topics that interest me to obtain community nutrition hours and left each one more confident in my abilities and knowledge base. View the gallery below to see my community interactions and education materials!

Mindful Recipe of the Month

My community nutrition preceptor and I highlighting the Mindful ingredient for the month of April-beans! Our video played throughout the day in the cafeteria for patrons to follow along, and printed recipes were provided on our Mindful table.

National Nutrition Month Health Fair

Myself and my community nutrition preceptor were invited to speak with a senior group in Montclair about nutrition, particularly eating well for older adults and how they can incorporate this year's theme, "A World of Flavors" into their cooking.

Cardiac Rehab Health Fair

Here I am showing off some heart-healthy popcorn snacks for those enrolled in MMC's cardiac rehab program. Along with this we provided a presentation on incorporating more fresh produce for heart health, as well as resources for where to access fresh fruits and vegetables.

"Spring Into Health"

Pictured here is the setup for our cardiac rehab outpatient health fair, complete with recipes, resources, snacks, and a place to sign up to work 1:1 with our outpatient dietitian, Camille.

Performance Based Nutrition for Track and Field Athletes

Student athletes met with me before one of their practices for a discussion on using nutrition to enhance performance in their sport. My main goals were to emphasize the importance of carbohydrates for our bodies, the individual nature of nutrition (especially for athletes) and provide some suggestions of types of snacks and timing of snacks to help performance. I had a personal connection to this as I was a student athlete at this school when I was younger!

Work with VNAHG WIC

Before starting my internship, I was employed full time with the WIC program through the Visiting Nurses Association Health Group (VNAHG). I remained part of the staff per diem during my internship and had the opportunity to further my experience working with women and children and the community. I also had the opportunity to be part of our transition from physical checks to an EBT card system and educate participants on its use.
